The Feast is DONE!

11.27.09

This is a challenging time to keep weight down with the average American gaining 5-8 lbs during the holiday season. A few ways to keep things in check are to watch the alcohol intake, load up more on proteins (meats) and eat fewer starchy carbs. Keep the fats low and try not to add additional salt to your meals. Any questions, drop us a line!

Winter Sports

12.06.09

Winter... what a season. Snow, cold, dry air etc. Keep in mind while exercising outdoors the cold, dry air can wreak havoc on the lungs and sinuses. Be certain to take extra time to warm up thoroughly prior to high aerobic/anaerobic activities. This will allow your lungs to adjust to the cold air and the possibility of bronchitis will be diminished. Also, try to breath through your nose as much as possible, this will warm and moisten the air you breath. Another bonus, nose breathing actually increases oxygen uptake. Never a bad thing.

Now get out there and ski, snowshoe, run, skate ski, climb or whatever you do and most importantly have fun!

The New Year

01.21.10

As the new year/new decade unfolds, it is time to assess priorities. Make this a time to focus on you and your health. This can come from many directions, getting that diet under control, starting an exercise program, or just promising yourself to get off the couch and MOVE. No one will do it for you, take a stand... make a difference, feel great.

A fun way to get started is to pick a realistic goal to work toward. With this 'carrot on the end of the stick', it is much easier to stay focused and on task. Challenge yourself, you might be surprised just what you have inside! Happy 2010, and cheers to the new YOU!

Resolution? What resolution?

02.10.10

Sound familiar? These days it seems the word 'resolution' is rather trite. The term is used to promise ourselves some amazing outcome, that is usually a pipe-dream at best. Just what does it mean to 'resolve' to do something? It means we have made up our minds. Have we? In a recent 'resolution' study, 52% of participants were confident they could reach their resolution goals. In reality only 12% actually achieved anything. Why? The idea sounded good... Right?

In the fitness/weight loss realm one usually discovers that the 'idea' is a bit more challenging to achieve than one originally expected. Most never think that a resolution to "loose weight" is actually a resolution to CHANGE THE WAY THEY LIVE, THINK, AND BEHAVE!!!! This is what is required to make any real change in this arena. There is no pill, drink, button, wrap, or otherwise to make the process significantly faster. What it takes is a PLAN. With that plan, reasonable goals must be made and rewards for attaining those goals must be in place. With a sound plan anything is possible.

While any exercise plan can take some time to show big results, one must consider actual time invested. If one invests 3 HOURS a week to a solid, sufficient, exercise plan, amazing gains can be achieved in as little as 12 weeks. Do the math... 3 hours times 12... 36 hours total. In less TIME than a typical work week one can change their body drastically. I've seen clients loose 20-50 pounds in this period of time and change their lives. Incredible. 36 hours...

So, while the task may seem insurmountable, it isn't. Patience and perseverance are critical to success. Nothing with any real value comes easy in our lives, everything that is successful requires hard work. Make a plan, be reasonable, be smart, and most importantly keep to it. It WILL HAPPEN...
